Colin Prays for US

I wrote this poem back on October 15, 2017, shared it with friends and submitted it for publication at the time. It didn’t get picked up, so this seems like a fitting time to self-publish it.

To kneel—proskunein—is no disrespect.
It is to worship,
To pray,
To gesture what American History
Made Blacks,
Scarred scapegoats,
Vulnerable bodies,
Necks exposed,
Livelihoods exposed,
Faith exposed,
Believing in the White Man God,
Who knelt,
Who worshiped,
Who prayed,
Who gestured what Roman History
Made Jews,
Scarred scapegoats,
Vulnerable bodies,
Necks exposed,
Livelihoods exposed,
Faith exposed,
Not believing in the Roman Gods,
Who refused to kneel.
So stand and salute your God,
Your Country,
With conformity,
With military decorum.
Forget the freedom
For which founders fled and fought,
To kneel, to worship, to pray,
To follow the dictates
Of conscience, of justice, of love.
